Suha
Pomelos from Davao on sale in Manila. Photo by Angie Pastor.
Suha is the Filipino word for the large citrus fruit more commonly known as “pomelo” in English-speaking countries.
It is fairly easy to peel off the thick rind of a local pomelo if you start with using a knife to cut through the outermost skin. And separating the fruit’s wedges is not a very messy affair.
Filipinos eat suha plain or with white rock salt (asin).
Davao on the large island of Mindanao in southern Philippines is known for many fruits, including pomelos.
Spellings variations also searched here on this site: pumelo / pumelos
There’s also a pomelo variant in the Philippines with lighter than pink juice sacs (?)… almost white/translucent gray with a vague hint of yellow. Less juicier and less sweet that these dark pink ones.
