coffee

Located in a narrow belt just north of the equator, the Philippines is one of only a few countries that produce all four main bean varieties: Robusta — which makes up 90% of the country’s total production — Arabica, Excelsa and Liberica.

Batangas province was among the world’s leading coffee exporters in the late 19th century.

The Philippines at the time was the world’s fourth biggest exporter of coffee beans, and when the coffee rust hit Brazil, Africa, and Java in 1880, our country became the only source of coffee beans globally.

That boom era of the Philippine coffee industry lasted until 1889, when the coffee rust hit the Philippines.

Today, the Philippines ranks about 110th in the world in terms of output.

The nation’s best coffee beans are from Benguet province, South Cotabato, Bukidnon, Mount Apo in Davao and Kanlaon in Negros.
