Sigarilyas (winged bean) is one of the vegetables mentioned in the widely known Filipino folk song Bahay Kubo.
Musical interlude: Sigarilyas at mani… sitaw, bataw, patani…
It is also known as kalamismis in Tagalog and as parlang or pallang in northern Luzon.
Scientific name: Psophocarpus tetragonolobus
Ang sigarilyas ay halámang baging na may bungang pod, may apat na panig at maprotina.
When I was young, sigarilyas were just plainly boiled and then sinasawsaw sa toyo’t kalamansi. Ganoon kasimple, puwedeng ulamin.
